Learn to swim

Our learn to swim program offers a range of lessons for all ages and abilities, from baby classes right through to adults wanting to refine technique.

Our nationally qualified teachers focus on individual learning to ensure we meet the needs of all participants. 

Available programs

We offer the following programs at both Aquanation in Ringwood and Aquahub in Croydon.

Please note: The Aquahub aquatics area is closed until late March 2025 due to essential maintenance. For more information, visit the Aquahub retiling project FAQs.

  • Infants (6 months to 3 years)
  • Preschool (3 to 5 years)
  • School age (5 years +)
  • Adults (beginner, intermediate and advanced - 16 years +) 
  • Access for All Abilities (AAA) for those with a disability (4 years +)

Our learn to swim program starts at $23.30 per week.

*The Learn to Swim program will conclude on Sunday 15 December 2024. Lessons will recommence on Monday 13 January 2025. Your Learn to Swim membership will automatically roll over to 2025 and remain active. Regular payments will continue as Aquanation and Croydon Memorial Pool will be open during this program break period for casual swimming (except on Christmas Day). If you do not want to access Aquanation or Croydon Memorial Pool during this time, you can freeze your membership via the client portal.

One accompanying parent or guardian swim entry is included when accompanying the program member.

  • Enrol in our Holiday Intensive Swim Program for just $7 a day - As a Learn to Swim member you can book into our Holiday Intensive Swim Program for just $7 a day (5 x 30 minute lesson)!

How to enrol

There are 3 easy steps to enrolling in our learn to swim program:

  • Step 1 - Find the right level and availability using our Level Guide.
  • Step 2 - Enrol your student/s in the correct level using the enrolment links in the Level Guide. These links will take you to our online portal.
  • Step 3 - Learn to swim! 

To enrol you will need to create an account, or log in to your existing account using the customer portal.

Level guide

The first step to enrolling your swimmer/s in to our Learn to Swim program is to find the right level.

If you are enrolling a new learn to swim student/s you will be prompted to complete an online skills assessment at the time of enrolment. This will ensure you enrol your swimmer/s into the right level.

Infants (6 months - 3 years)

Level/Skills 

 Aquatic Playgroup

  • $7 casual entry - bookings required
  • Semi-structured session to introduce your baby to the pool
  • Children from 3 months to 12 months
  • A parent is required to join the group

 Wonders 1

  • Children from 6 months to 11 months of age
  • Lessons focus on water familiarisation activities and educating parents about water safety
  • A parent is required to join the lesson
  • Up to 8 pairs of parents and babies enrolled into the class

  • Children from 12 to 23 months of age
  • Lessons focus on building your child’s confidence in the water and educating parents about water safety
  • A parent is required to join the lesson
  • Up to 8 pairs of parents and babies enrolled into the class

  • Children from 24 to 35 months of age
  • Lessons focus on growing your child’s confidence while introducing movement through the water and educating parents about water safety
  • A parent is required to join the lesson
  • Up to 8 pairs of parents and babies enrolled into the class

Preschool (3 to 5 years)

Level/Skills 

 Wonders 4

  • Learning how to move, walk, jump, and feel comfortable in the water
  • Getting face and ears wet
  • Learning how to blow bubbles instead of holding breath
  • Floating on front and back with swim teacher’s assistance
  • Learning how to return to a standing position after floating
  • Kick with a noodle on front and back for 3 metres

 Pre-school 1

  • Kick on front 5 meters with eyes in the water (using a kickboard)
  • Kick on back 3 meters with ears in the water
  • Independently float on back and front in a starfish position
  • Safely enter and exit the pool

If the swimmer is currently working towards these skills, you should enrol in Wonders Pre-school 1. If your swimmer can already confidently do these skills, please look at the next level.

  • Swim 5 metres on back with arms by their sides (no equipment)
  • Submerge beneath the water to retrieve an object from chest depth water
  • Tread water using an aid
  • Slide-in entry and exit 

If the swimmer is currently working towards these skills, you should enrol in Pre-school 2B. If your swimmer can already confidently do these skills, please look at the next level.

Pre-school 2C

  • Swim 5 metres freestyle with side-breathing and correct body position
  • Sitting dive off the edge of the pool and glide through the water
  • Independently swim (tread water) in deep water where they are not able to stand

  • Identify people and actions to help in an aquatic emergency

  • Understand how to stay calm and call for help in an emergency
  • Kneeling dive off the edge of the pool and glide through the water

  • Demonstrate how to use a reach rescue to save someone in the water

  • Swim 25 metres breaststroke and survival backstroke with correct sequence and efficient glides
  • Swim 10 metres dolphin kick
  • Demonstrate how to use a throw rescue to save someone in the water

If the swimmer is currently working towards these skills, you should enrol in Level 6.

  • Swim 75 metres freestyle and backstroke with correct technique
  • Swim 50 metres breaststroke and survival backstroke with correct sequence and efficient glides
  • Demonstrate a forward summersault in the water

  • Swim 100 metres freestyle and backstroke with correct technique
  • Swim 75 metres breaststroke and survival backstroke with correct sequence and efficient glides
  • Swim 15 metres sidestroke with correct sequence
  • Introduction to butterfly
  • Demonstrate a tumble turn off the pool wall

Adults (16+ years)

Level/Skills 

 Adult beginners

  • Learning how to move, walk, jump, and feel comfortable in the water
  • Getting face and ears wet
  • Learning breath control
  • Floating on front and back with swim teacher’s assistance
  • Independently return to a standing position after floating
  • Kick with an aid on front and back for 5 metres

If the swimmer is currently working towards these skills, you should book in to Adult beginners. If you/r swimmer can already confidently do these skills, please look at the next level.

Adult intermediate

  • Swim 15 metres on front (no equipment)
  • Swim 15 metres on back no equipment)
  • Submerge beneath the water to retrieve an object from chest depth water
  • Rotate (roll) from floating on front to floating on back
  • Tread water using an aid
  • Slide-in entry and exit

If the swimmer is currently working towards these skills, you should book in to Adult intermediate. If you/r swimmer can already confidently do these skills, please look at the next level.

Check Adult intermediate availability and book online:

Aquanation - Adult intermediate

Aquahub - Adult intermediate

Adult advanced

  • Swim 50 metres on front (no equipment)
  • Swim 50 metres on back (no equipment)
  • Tread water for 1 minute without an aid
  • Safety jump into deep water and return to the edge to exit the water
  • Introduction to competition starts and turns

If the swimmer is currently working towards these skills, you should book in to Adult advanced.

Access for All Abilities (AAA) for those with a disability

Our Access for All Abilities program is available for students with additional learning needs.

We work with parents/carers to find a suitable swim teacher for their student, and work to transition students to group lessons where applicable.

Freeze (suspend) your learn to swim program membership

Your membership entitles you to eight (8) weeks freeze per calendar year for any reason, including medical and public holidays (a medical certificate is not required within this 8 weeks allocation).

Any freeze requests beyond the allocated eight (8) weeks per calendar year require a medical certificate.
