Extensive aquatic works for Aquahub from mid December

7 November 2019

Aquahub is improving it’s aquatic facilities by refurbishing the pools and sauna to ensure your continued enjoyment for years to come.

Due to the extent of the works the aquatic facilities at Aquahub will be closed from Monday 16 December 2019 to Sunday 26 January 2020. The gym, group fitness studios and stadium will remain open and unaffected throughout this time.

Aquahub attracts a high level of use by the community. To ensure it remains available for future generations Maroondah City Council delivers programmed maintenance on our assets occurring as part of the infrastructure life cycle. Learn more about the works here

What works are taking place?

Council has carefully programmed these works to occur at one time to minimise disruption to the community.  The shutdown period allows for a number of complex works to be undertaken. The works include extensive maintenance of the scum gutters and balance tanks, replacement of all the sauna timber panelling and general safety and maintenance repairs and upgrades unable to be undertaken when the pool is operational.

The most extensive of these works is the scum gutter and balance tank repairs, which due to the specialist nature of the works require time to ensure the new epoxy coatings adhere correctly.  The process involves removal of the existing epoxy coating, allowing the areas to fully dry before being treated and a new epoxy coating is applied.  These works are unable to be undertaken whilst the pool is operational, and will ensure the Aquahub remains operating at a premium level in the future.

The pools will be drained to a lower level but not fully drained.  Any water drained from the pool will be used through other parts of the facilities before being treated in conjunction with the centre’s usual process before releasing into the sewer system.

Generally maintenance is required throughout the year on various parts of the pool.  The re-lining of the balance tanks and scum gutters is required every 5 to 7 years in line with best industry practice and the Council maintenance works programme.
